Medical marijuana is used to treat a variety of physical and psychological conditions from pain and nausea to stress and addictions and even epilepsy. But it is also a very effective sleep aid! It’s easy to overlook poor sleep as a health problem, but the fact is, we need restful sleep to function at our best. Sleep is even more important if you are dealing with a medical condition or mood problem.

While many people use marijuana to relax and unwind or to manage medical conditions, few think of it as a sleep aid, even though it can make you sleepy. If sleep has been eluding you, medical marijuana can help you get the rest you need. Here’s how to start using cannabis to help you sleep.

Indica Strains Are Best For Relaxation And Sleep

If you’ve been using marijuana for any amount of time you have probably learned that there’s a difference in cannabis strains or varieties. Sativa strains have higher amounts of THC in them, which helps boost moods and energy levels and get your brain going. This can have the opposite effect of relaxing you and actually make it harder to fall asleep. If you have been using Sativa for a different condition and noticed more trouble falling or staying asleep, try using it earlier in the day to avoid insomnia or sleep disturbances.

If you’re having trouble sleeping and want to try marijuana as a sleep aid, we recommend Indica strains. The higher amounts of CBD in Indica strains relax you physically and is often prescribed to treat anxiety or manage chronic pain – both of which can keep you up at night! If you are already using Indica for a medical condition, you may have already experienced this beneficial effect!

Tips To Keep In Mind When Using Medical Marijuana As A Sleep Aid

  • Start low and go slow. If you are new to using cannabis as a sleep aid, start with a low dose and see how it goes. Taking too high a dose can be too stimulating and prevent you from sleeping or it may lead to a weed “hangover” in the morning.
  • Draw on your personal experience. If you have used cannabis in the past think about how your body reacted to different strains and amounts and use that as a guide to figure out what type and amount you should start with. If you are unsure about how to get started using weed for sleep, call or visit one of our dispensaries for advice.
  • You can make use of old weed. If you have old or stale weed laying around, it might be salvageable as a sleep aid. As THC is exposed to the air, it oxidizes and converts to cannabidiol or CBN. CBN has a strong sedating effect. Just 2.5mg to 5mg of CBN is comparable to 5mg to 10mg of diazepam (Valium).
  • You might have fewer dreams. If dreams or nightmares interrupt your sleep, cannabis might put a stop to that. Weed interrupts REM sleep – the stage of sleep when we dream. Less time in the REM stage can result in fewer dreams or less vivid dreams. If you like dreaming, don’t worry, they should return to normal after you stop using cannabis as a sleep aid.
