Smoking is the most well-known way to ingest marijuana but it’s far from the only way to use it.

  • Edibles. Today’s edibles go way beyond brownies, although you can find them too. Some people make their own edibles, but for reliable dosing, it’s best to purchase edibles from a reputable manufacturer.  
  • Oils and Tinctures. Cannabis oil and tinctures consist of cannabis flower extracts suspended in a carrier solution of either oil or alcohol. These liquids can be mixed with food or drinks, taken directly under the tongue via a medicine dropper. You can also buy cannabis oil in capsule form for more controlled dosing.
  • Topicals. Topical creams, lotions, ointments, and sprays allow you to target skin and joint conditions, such as eczema, arthritis, tendonitis, and joint pain without any neurological side effects.
  • Vaporizers. Vaporizers use water to heat cannabis flowers and release their medicinal effects into the water vapor. You just sit nearby and inhale the water vapor to medicate! It’s similar to smoking without being as harsh on your lungs or as strongly scented.

Tips To Keep In Mind

Your body responds differently to marijuana that is ingested versus inhaled. Keep these tips in mind as you get started with medical marijuana:

  • Speed of Absorption. The effects of inhaled marijuana can be felt almost immediately. This is because the marijuana is quickly absorbed through the capillaries where it enters the bloodstream. Ingested marijuana, on the other hand, must be digested in the stomach before it can be absorbed by the body. This means the effects aren’t felt until 30 minutes later or even longer.
  • Dosing Differences. Because inhaled marijuana is absorbed so quickly and THC and CBD absorbed so effectively, patients who smoke it can use smaller doses to achieve the same effects as those who ingest it. The digestive process reduces the bioavailability of THC and CBD, which makes the desired effects less intense when marijuana is eaten.
  • Always Start Small. No matter how you are taking your medical marijuana, always start with the lowest dosage recommended by your physician and adjust upward from there. Too much, too fast can make you feel ill or produce unwanted side effects.
  • Give it Time. Given how long it can take for certain methods of ingestion to be felt in the body, be sure to give yourself enough time for the marijuana to be fully absorbed before you take more. This way you’ll avoid over-medicating and making yourself sick. It can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 to 2 hours for the full effects of marijuana to be felt. So be patient.
